Mental poverty, which is also called the poverty of ideas, is simply inability to think. It manifests in lack of wisdom to meet the challenges of life. Mental poverty is responsible for the wrong decisions and the perverted actions of so many people. It is a mental limitation characterised by inability or difficulty in knowing what one wants, why one wants it, how to get what one wants and what to do if it is got. Mental poverty pushes people to take unprofitable decisions. It is this poverty that makes people steal rather than work. It makes people to eat their seeds rather than invest it for greater harvests.
Mental poverty makes people not to be original. It pushes people to copy what others are doing all the time without considering the outcome. A person suffering from mental poverty could inherit one million dollars today, but will not be able to account for it or show what it has been used for in a year’s time. Mental poverty makes people to become slaves of people who can think. Mental poverty makes one to negotiate business transactions with thieves without knowing. It is this poverty that makes people to depend on other men for guidance. Lack of personal relationship with the Almighty God leads to mental poverty. The Bible says, the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. Mental poverty can be overcome.
