This represents total abstinence from food and water for the period of the fast, which could be for a whole day or more, depending on the individual involved. However, if this fast will be more than three days, it is advisable to at least take water on the third day, for renewal of strength, and to avoid dehydration, which can be life threatening.
In Acts 9:9, Apostle Paul went on a full fast for three days following his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus: For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. It was not recorded if Jesus had an absolute fast for 40 days, that is, without water; but He was empowered by God during this season. Moses also engaged in 40 days of fasting and prayer when he wanted to receive the Ten Commandments from God.
However, he was on the mountain with God and God gave him strength during this time (Exodus 34:28), and remember the Bible states, one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day (2 Peter 3:8). Esther also fasted for three days and nights without food and water before she went to meet the King for the rescue of her people. The Bible states: …fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day, My maids and I will fast likewise. (Esther 4:16). Today, many Christians follow this example to abstain from foods or activities for a short time, looking to God for strength. However, depending on your decision, discretion should be applied.
