We are born with five senses:
Sight
Hearing
Smell
Taste
Touch
But life has taught me that effective people operate with a sixth sense — COMMON SENSE.
Common sense is the ability to see things as they truly are and to do what ought to be done — not what feels good, sounds spiritual, or looks impressive on social media.
You can have two eyes and still be blind to reality.
You can have two ears and still not hear wisdom knocking.
You can have a sharp brain and still make foolish decisions.
That is why education alone does not guarantee effectiveness.
Common sense is not a certificate.
It is not an academic degree.
It is not a title.
It is discernment applied to daily life.
The Bible puts it this way:
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” (Proverbs 4:7)
Understanding is simply wisdom in action; and wisdom is common sense refined.
An abundance of common sense is called WISDOM.
This explains why:
A university professor can fail in marriage while a market woman builds a peaceful home.
A PhD holder can be broke while an unlettered man runs a thriving business.
A preacher can quote Greek and Hebrew yet lack emotional intelligence.
Jesus Himself illustrated this clearly.
“A wise man built his house upon the rock… a foolish man built his house upon the sand.” (Matthew 7:24–27)
Both men heard the same word.
Both had access to truth.
The difference was common sense; one prepared for reality, the other assumed life would always be sunny.
Common sense tells you:
Don’t pray for harvest when you refuse to plant seeds.
Don’t fast for direction when clear instructions are staring you in the face.
Don’t shout “God will do it” while ignoring personal responsibility.
Don’t expect loyalty from people you keep mistreating.
The Bible warns us:
“As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.” (Proverbs 26:11)
Foolishness is often not ignorance; it is knowledge without common sense.
Without common sense:
Education becomes decoration.
Knowledge becomes noise.
Revelation becomes frustration.
That is why Solomon prayed:
“Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart…” (1 Kings 3:9)
Not more books.
Not longer life.
But sense; the ability to judge rightly.
In today’s world:
Common sense is talking less and thinking more.
Common sense is choosing peace over proving a point.
Common sense is knowing when to speak, when to stay silent, and when to walk away.
Never confuse being informed with being wise.
You don’t need to know everything.
You just need enough sense to do the right thing at the right time in the right way.
Because in the school of life,
Common sense is the real curriculum; and wisdom is the graduation.
I hope this makes small sense?
shalom!
