This type of prayer is acknowledging and repenting from your sins, especially known ones. It is confessing your sins and tapping into God’s grace, preparing the heart to be cleansed by the Blood of Jesus and transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Confession of sins is necessary and is an important aspect of our prayer life. The Bible says:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9
This helps to keep our spiritual hearts clean and just as you detox your physical body from waste, you need to detox your heart regularly from toxins of sin. By so doing, you keep a clear conscience before God and man. Remember, Scripture states that if you regard iniquity in your heart, the Lord will not hear you (Psalms 66:18), and the essence of our prayer is for God to hear us. So, you need a clean heart for God to hear and answer your prayers.
One of the things that made David a man after God’s heart was his ability to quickly repent of his sins. He wrote, Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me (Psalms 51:10). To maintain our relationship with God, a clean heart is a non-negotiable requirement. David also said: I acknowledged my sin unto thee, And mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; And thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin (Psalm 32:5).
The prayer of confession prevents hindrances to your prayers, giving no room to the devil to afflict, accuse or condemn you before God; this therefore opens you up to help from above.
